PETALING JAYA: The grieving family of Go Lee Kun, who was a victim of a snatch theft, wants the authorities to learn from the tragedy that has robbed them of their loved one.
Lee Kun’s father, 65-year-old Go Hong Chin, urged police and the Government to take serious measures to curb street crimes, especially snatch thefts, which had become rampant and posed a menace to women.
However, in response, Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed reminded the people not to generalise incidents of crime.
“The tragedy that befell Lee Kun is an isolated incident,” he said. “It does not mean that the Sri Manja area is not safe.”
ACP Arjunaidi said, instead of criticising the police, Hong Chin and the public should come forward to assist the police in investigations.
“We welcome any witness to provide us with details,” he said.
“We want to find the culprits responsible for Lee Kun’s death as soon as possible,” ACP Arjunaidi said, adding that no one had come forward so far.
Hong Chin, who owns a consultancy firm, said the authorities should do more, as despite their reports of a reduction in crime nationwide, there news about street crime was rampant.
Youngest of five siblings, 27-year-old Lee Kun was found injured on the road near the Sri Manja Court around 8pm last Thursday.
She was believed to have been a victim of a snatch theft as the strap of her handbag was broken.
She died after being in a coma for five days.
Petaling Jaya MP Hee Loy Sian said the incident was “only one of many which plagued residents in the area”.
“Too little is being done to stop these criminals from preying on the honest, hard-working people here,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
A resident, who only wished to be known as Sally, 50, said they lived in fear everyday.
“Every time we walk out the door, we know we are being watched and can be targeted by criminals,” she said.
“We can’t go on living like this. Something needs to be done.”
