ROMPIN: An express bus driver was killed when the bus he was driving skidded and overturned at Jalan Johor Baru-Kuantan here.
The 16 passengers in the bus, comprising 10 men and six women, survived.
The bus was on its way from Kota Baru, Kelantan and was heading to Pasir Gudang, Johor Baru when the incident happened at 5am yesterday.
“The driver Ismail Ali, 59, died at the scene from severe head injuries,” Rompin police chief DSP Johari Yahaya said yesterday.
He said initial investigations revealed that the bus had skidded and rammed into the road divider and lamp-post in front of the Petronas petrol station in Tanjung Gemok before overturning.
It was found that the bus driver was driving alone without a co-driver.
He added that 14 of the 16 passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby clinic for treatment.
A passenger Ummi Kalthum Zulkifli, 25, said she was asleep and was awakened by the bus swaying before crashing.
“I boarded the bus at Bachok, Kelantan, and I noticed there was only one driver driving all the way. I also heard the other passengers saying the bus was speeding,” she added.
Another passenger Mohd Tajul Fikri Mahmud, 34, a teacher at a school in Pasir Gudang, said he boarded the bus in Jerteh, Terengganu.
“I fell asleep and when I awoke, I had already been moved out of the bus. The bus only made one stop at Cherating, Pahang, before proceeding with the journey,” he said. — Bernama
