KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore President Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam was accorded a state welcome at the Parliament Square yesterday.
Dr Tan and his wife, Mary, were greeted on arrival at 2.35pm by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah.
Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
The president, who is on a three-day official visit to Malaysia, later inspected a guard-of-honour mounted by 107 officers and men from the First Battalion Royal Malay Regiment led by Major Mohamad Abdullah, after the national anthems of both countries were played. A 21-gun salute was also fired to mark the occasion.
Malaysian Cabinet ministers and other dignitaries were also introduced to the Singaporean head of state.
This is Dr Tan’s first official visit to Malaysia, at the invitation of Tuanku Abdul Halim.
The president is scheduled to visit the University of Malaya, Permata Negara and the Islamic Arts Museum.
He is also scheduled to visit Malacca, where he will meet Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob and tour historical sites in the state. — Bernama
