JOHOR BARU: A South African bride-to-be was arrested at Senai Airport for smuggling RM1mil worth of drugs into the country.
The 22-year old woman, who arrived in the airport from a flight from KL International Airport, was nabbed at around 11.10pm on Thursday.
Johor Customs deputy director Abdullah Sidik said his officers found two packets of drugs covered with alumanium foils hidden in the woman's luggage.
"We believe they are methamphetamine weighing 4.9kg and valued at RM931,000," he said in a press conference on Wednesday.
Abdullah said the woman, who a first timer visitor to Malaysia, claimed that she came to Malaysia to look around for a place for her honeymoon.
He said prior to arriving in Kuala Lumpur, the suspect boarded a flight from Johannesburg to Bangkok and from there she flew to New Delhi and Chennai before taking a connecting flight to Johor Baru.
The suspect has been remanded to assist in the investigation and the case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) Dangers Drugs Act 1952.
If found guilty, the suspect will receive mandatory death penalty.
