KUALA LUMPUR: Hairspray The Broadway Musical made its debut here to a sold-out audience.
Performing the 1960s Baltimore musical to a nearly 3,000-strong audience yesterday, the British cast mesmerised them with iconic numbers like Good Morning Baltimore, Miss Baltimore Crabs and You Can’t Stop the Beat.
“I’m excited to watch the show as I’m a big fan of the musical. I can’t wait to catch You Can’t Stop the Beat. It’s one of my favourite songs,”said Suhaida Johari, 20, who turned up as early as 7pm for the show.
“I watched the movie – again – two days ago to refresh my memory. I hope it will be a big hit here,” said 24-year-old Mishael Vanessa Lee.
Hairspray The Broadway Musical follows the journey of plump teenager Tracy in 1960s Baltimore as she dreams of being on The Corny Collins Show, a local television dance programme.
When she finally lands a spot on the show, she uses her newfound fame to fight against racial discrimination.
Hairspray The Broadway Musical is presented by Yvents! with Star Publications (M) Bhd as the media partner. It is being staged at the Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Sept 17 to 22.
