SEREMBAN: When eight-year-old Suzan Kaur suffered fainting spells in school regularly, her mother took her to the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital here and was shocked when doctors told her that the child has a hole-in-the heart condition.
Ranjit Kaur, 28, a single mother with two young sons, was devastated to learn that a heart surgery would cost RM5,000. She was only receiving a RM300 monthly aid from the welfare department.
Not knowing what else to do, Ranjit met Negri Sembilan MCA deputy organising secretary Teoh Eng Kian and her prayers were answered when he agreed to help Suzan.
One thing led to another and soon Teoh and state MCA deputy treasurer Julia Wong were talking to officials from the Health Ministry and the National Heart Institute (IJN) to arrange for a surgery.
Recalling the earlier months, Ranjit said she became worried when Suzan’s weight went down from 20kg to just 17kg.
“A neighbour then advised me to see a certain ‘Mr Teoh’ at the Mawar Renal Medical Centre who she said would surely help me,” added Ranjit, who has two boys, aged seven and six.
Expressing her gratitude to the state MCA, she said: “I was at my wit’s end as to what to do and I don’t have the words to express my gratitude to Teoh and Wong.”
Teoh, the Barisan Nasional candidate in the Rasah parliamentary seat at the last general election, said he and Wong contacted the ministry and the IJN to help arrange surgery for Suzan.
“We appealed to them to waive the cost and were successful,” he said, adding that Ranjit needed to only pay a nominal fee of RM100 for the operation.
Teoh said the state MCA had helped more than 600 patients to get discounted or free treatment at the IJN since 2010.
Wong, who contested in the Rahang state seat in GE13, said the state MCA would monitor Suzan’s condition and provide for her post-surgery medication.
“We will ensure Suzan gets the necessary treatment and support so that she can lead a normal life like other children her age.”
