KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has pledged that Sabah will see a more accelerated development in the next 50 years.
The prime minister said Sabahans made the right choice 50 years ago when they overwhelmingly decided to become a part of Malaysia.
"Though there have been some differences among us, but what is in our hearts, our blood as a nation, cannot be separated," Najib said.
He said Sabah had enjoyed tremendous progress over the past 50 years. This, he said, could be seen in the construction of roads in the state from just 1,500 kilometers to over 21,000 kilometers in 2013.
Poverty rate, he added, had been slashed from 56% in 1963 to 8.1% this year.
Najib said these achievements were possible because Sabahans had chosen a state government that was in sync with the federal government.
A brief spell of rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the people who thronged Tanjung Aru beach to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Malaysia Day.
Waving the Jalur Gemilang along with the Sabah flags, the crowd sang enthusiastically to patriotic songs. They were also entertained with traditional performances.
The crowd began gathering as early as 4pm resulting in a massive traffic jam stretching several kilometres.
Among those who witnessed the event were Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman as well as federal and state leaders.
Earlier, when launching the massive redevelopment of Tanjung Aru, the Prime Minister said progress in the nation must never be at the expense of the environment.
"We need development but this must be in sync with the environment. We need to protect and preserve our natural heritage," he said.
"People will be able to enjoy them for generations to come," said Najib, adding that he was excited about the Tanjung Aru Eco Devolopment scheme covering an area of some 260ha.
