The Malaysian dream

PETALING JAYA: Thanks to pop culture lore and real life feel-good stories, the American dream is entrenched in the collective psyche.

It is touted as the achievement of progress and prosperity through hard work and the promise of equality and democracy. A green card seemed to be all the green light one ever needs.

Though that dream has evolved since its inception, with the narrative now expanded to include setbacks along with successes, it leads us to ask: what exactly is the Malaysian dream?

Does it mirror the American dream by also laying claim to the right of ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’, as outlined in the US Declaration of Independence?
Or do Malaysians dream of something else altogether in a 50-year-old Malaysia?
