KUALA LUMPUR: The Government should embed the policy of teaching science and mathematics in English into the National Education Blueprint 2013-2025 to boost the rankings of public universities, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
According to the former prime minister, the emphasis on English is a serious matter and all relevant parties should look into it.
“To improve rankings, more emphasis should be placed on English, especially for the teaching of science and maths. That is my stand,” Dr Mahathir told reporters after attending the Japanese Chamber of Trade and Indus-try Malaysia’s 30th anniversary celebration here yesterday.
He was asked to comment on the slide in rankings of several Malaysian universities in the report released by the QS World University Ranking recently.
Only Universiti Malaya remained in the top 200 in the world this year, while Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa, and Universiti Teknologi Mara dropped in rankings compared to last year.
The National Education Blueprint was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in September last year and was aimed at producing students with attributes such as bilingual proficiency and having thinking skills.
The blueprint’s initiatives will be implemented in three stages beginning this year, until 2025.
However, Dr Mahathir commended the Government’s move to make English a must-pass subject in the SPM from 2016 onwards.
On the issue of issuance of identity cards to unqualified foreigners in Sabah under the supposed Project IC, Dr Mahathir denied any involvement in the matter and took a swipe at an Opposition leader who was “his deputy”.
He claimed that the leader should have known about the purported Sabah initiative as he would have been familiar with Government policy as he was holding a Government post.
“If that was part of Government policy, why didn’t he stop it? Is he going to lie to the (Royal) commission (of Inquiry) that I told him to do all these things? He should know. He was my deputy.”
