PETALING JAYA: The sole Malaysian found to be in Zamboanga City so far is safe. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman, who revealed this, said no other Malaysian was reported to be in the affected areas.
“Our diplomatic representatives have contacted the Malaysian who is safe in Zamboanga City,’’ he said in a statement yesterday.
The man was said to be on a visit to the city before being caught in the unrest there.
Anifah said a directive had been issued to the Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines and Consulate-General in Davao City to provide assistance to any Malaysian who could be stranded due to the fighting in Zamboanga and send them home.
“The ministry advises Malaysians intending to travel to Zamboanga and areas deemed unsafe to postpone their trip until peace is restored,” he added.
As an added precaution, he said Malaysian security forces under the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) would intensify patrols along the borders of Sabah and southern Philippines to thwart any security threat stemming from the unrest in Zamboanga.
“The armed clashes between the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and Philippine security forces in Zamboanga as reported is an internal matter of the republic.
“We are confident that the Philippine government and authorities there will be able to control the situation and restore peace in the affected areas,” he said.
Anifah reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to facilitate the peace process between the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to end the conflict in southern Philippines.
Malaysian security forces were put on high alert on Monday along its sea borders with southern Philippines following the attack by Moro rebels on Zamboanga city.
This caused a security alert in Sabah due to a possible spillover of trouble from southern Philippines.
