MALACCA: A tragedy that caused a former hotel banquet supervisor to lose his right arm and his girlfriend took a dramatic twist when another woman who had long admired him offered to take care of him for life.
“It was like a scene from a Tamil movie. I was surprised when Vasugi came to my family house in in Pasir Panjang, Port Dickson, in 2010, and told my parents she wanted to take care of me and marry me,” he said at Taman Melaka Raya yesterday.
The couple now has a three-year-old daughter and Vasugi, also 25, still works as a waitress at the beach hotel in Port Dickson, where she first met her husband.
The couple, together with little Vasanavi, were here as part of their fund-raising drive to collect RM45,000 to have a robotic prosthetic arm for Shanmugam, who now works as a security guard.
Vasugi was one of the seven staff members who worked under Shanmugam, who was just 18 when he took the job as banquet supervisor at the hotel.
He was romantically involved with another colleague but she deserted him after an accident involving his motorbike and a lorry in Batang Melaka which caused him to lose his right arm in 2007.
He was also left with permanent scars on his head and hands.
He said his ex-employer was kind to spend RM50,000 on him for several corrective surgeries at a private hospital but his condition remains the same.
“Vasugi was adamant to marry me despite my disability, although I had often scolded her during work,” he said, adding that she had secretly kept photographs of him.
Vasugi, who was with him during the interview, said: “I fell in love with him at first sight and will continue to be with him although we are now facing financial difficulties.”
She said there were objections from her family but her father eventually relented on the condition that she did not go back to seek his help if Shanmugam could not take care of her.
“I am confident he will be able to fend for us once he has his robotic arm,” she said, adding that they were waiting for Socso to confirm if he was eligible under its invalid pensions plan.
