A cycle to remember: Wright proposing to Teoh with a bouquet of 99 roses, balloons and a painting at Beach Street.
GEORGE TOWN: Sunday mornings along Beach Street are great. The road is blocked off, and people ride freely around on bicycles.
For hotel receptionist Teoh Chang Le, 23, it got greater yesterday. She was on her bicycle as usual when she received the surprise of her life.
She had rented a vintage bike and was cycling along the street with her friends when she saw her long-time boyfriend standing by the street with a bouquet of 99 roses and a diamond ring – and the tears came unbidden.
“Please marry me. I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you. I cannot bear the thought of life without you, and I humbly ask that you take me as your man,” pleaded accountant Luca Wright, 25, on his knees.
Wright also came bearing a red heart-shaped balloon inscribed with the words: “Will you marry me?”
Just in case all that was not enough to sweep his lady off her feet, Wright had also commissioned local artist Renny Cheng to paint a large picture of him kneeling before Teoh and propped the painting beside him as he proposed.
“We’ve been dating for six years. We’ve talked about marriage but never seriously because we were both busy with work.
“I now work in New Zealand and she works in Singapore. We are back in Penang for a break and this is my big chance. I am so glad she said yes,” said Wright who grew up in Penang and is half-English and half-Chinese.
A teary-eyed Teoh, who is also from Penang, was a little too emotional to speak and simply nodded vigorously when asked if she was happy.
