MALACCA: A 23-year-old man, connected to drug-related activities, burglaries and sexual assault on schoolgirls in the past, has been nabbed over the shocking rape and robbery case at a hostel here 10 days ago.
A source told The Star the suspect was picked up at a bus terminal in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday.
It is believed that he fled from Malacca after realising he was being tracked down for committing the heinous crime against a 22-year-old undergraduate on Aug 29.
Police also recovered a stolen car that the suspect had used to flee from the state.
It was reported earlier that the victim, from Bandar Sri Damansara in Selangor, was sitting for a major examination and had dozed off after completing her revision at around 7am.
She was rudely awakened by the presence of the man, who had trespassed into the supposedly highly-protected hostel of a public university here and entered her room.
The intruder, who held a sharp object, threatened to kill the girl if she raised the alarm.
After raping the student and stealing her belongings, the culprit pushed her into the bathroom and ordered her to remove the semen traces so as not to leave any evidence against him.
The victim, however, locked the bathroom door and screamed for help, causing the intruder to bolt.
Covering herself with a blanket, she later sought help from her hostel mates.
The incident was the second since March last year, when a 19-year-old student from Kuala Lumpur alleged that a man wearing a hood had entered her room to rape and rob her.
The Malacca Action Group for Parents praised police for their prompt action in catching the alleged rapist.
Its chairman Mak Chee Kin, however, said it was shocking that the crime had taken place at the hostel of a reputable public university in the centre of the historic city.
