RAWANG: The Selangor education department will probe claims by a cendol seller here that a replacement teacher had hit her 14-year-old son during an English class.
Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan said after visiting Janpiter Steeman and his mother, S. Ganggadhevi, 48, at their home here yesterday.
Kamalanathan said the allegations against the teacher were very serious, adding, however, that the Aug 28 incident was an isolated case.
“I view this seriously. This kind of thing shouldn’t happen. If it is true, the teacher must face action.”
Ganggadhevi had claimed that the teacher picked up a chair and repeatedly hit the boy, injuring his arms and legs, because the teacher felt Janpiter was “showing off” to his classmates.
He had been tapping his pen when it allegedly ran out of ink, which irritated the teacher.
The boy reportedly did not heed the teacher’s order to rise from his seat and was then ordered to stand at the back of the class.
The teacher was further annoyed when the boy moved his leg and allegedly hit him with the chair.
Ganggadhevi claimed the boy was merely shifting his position because he had felt pain in his thigh. He had broken his left leg when he was 10.
She had also alleged the headmaster had offered to give her RM280 on Sept 3 to withdraw a police report made against the teacher.
Kamalanathan said Janpiter had not returned to school since the incident as he was afraid to see the teacher again.
“But I have assured him he will not be harmed. Every student has a right to proper education without having to worry about these things,” he said.
On the bribery allegations, Kamalanathan said it was a misunderstanding.
“Ganggadhevi couldn’t work for three days as she was busy taking her son to the hospital and taking care of him.
“I believe the headmaster was offering to reimburse her for her business losses,” he said.
Ganggadhevi said she would take Janpiter for a full medical check up at a hospital today as he has been complaining about not being able to move his arm, which is now in a sling.
