KOTA KINABALU: A sense of urgency is needed among the various agencies to ensure that safety measures at 10 districts placed under the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) is fully realised.
Voicing his concern over the current structure, coordination and planning of agencies under the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said more needed to be done to boost security in these areas.
“We need to do more in terms of equipment and assets as well. And we also need to increase public cooperation and get village chiefs, fishermen and Rela members involved. They are among the first in the line of defence,” he said after attending the Libaran Umno Hari Raya gathering in Sandakan yesterday.
Hishammuddin also said that construction of camps for military infantry battalions at Kudat district in the north and Lahad Datu, Semporna and eastern Sabah would begin as soon as land matters were resolved.
He said his ministry and military officers were discussing with their Sabah Land and Survey Department counterparts on the sites for the camps in Semporna and Kudat while talks were ongoing with Felda officials for the site at the Sahabat area in Lahad Datu.
Hishammuddin said Armed Forces chief Jen Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had finalised the military and police operational areas within Esscom.
