JOHOR BARU: Guess it is time to quit smoking for a man who stopped at a petrol station to buy cigarettes, only to walk into a robbery.
The 34-year-old found himself in the middle of a heist of an automated teller machine (ATM) at the petrol station in Kempas at 4.30am yesterday.
According to a source, the man was unharmed by the estimated five robbers who wore masks but they took away his mobile phone and money before driving off with the ATM.
The robbers had used a Hilux and a tow truck to carry out their task.
Johor acting CID chief Asst Comm Azizan Anan said police recovered the ATM about 20km away in Senai here several hours later.
“The ATM was empty. We are checking out how much money there was inside it.”
He said police were also reviewing the CCTV footage from the petrol station.
