PETALING JAYA: Dr Kelly Siew Yiew Chin has a special gift – she can handle the scalpel, microphone and spatula with equal ease.
The 29-year-old, who has degrees in Advanced Medical Science and Medicine and Surgery from the Melbourne University, is also a musician and food enthusiast.
According to Siew, who pursued a foundation course in medicine immediately after her Form Five, it was her childhood ambition to be both a doctor and singer.
“My family, being Asian, of course preferred the first option,’’ said Siew who came out among the top 0.5% in Australia when the foundation course results were released.
After completing her studies, Siew practised medicine in Australia for three years before coming home in 2011 and embarked on her music career.
Siew, who is from Bintulu, Sarawak, said she had always been singing and had won various competitions.
“I joined my first singing competition when I was seven and didn’t stop even after I moved to Australia.
“During my time there, I was the first runner-up in the 2007 Melbourne Chinese New Talent Singing Championship,’’ she said.
Siew, who plays the organ, violin and piano, has been writing her own songs in English and Chinese and has her own band.
“We perform in a lot of places and I occasionally do some solo gigs as well,’’ said Siew, adding that she does a mixture of ballads, top 40s, jazz, rock and dance, when performing.
Siew has also recorded a trance track, which has been released in the UK under Enhance Music label.
“It is doing well, so I guess I might experiment in that genre a little more,’’ added Siew.
The multi-talented Siew also takes part in PlateCulture, which is an agency of sorts connecting food connoisseurs and enthusiasts.
She has opened up her home and cooks for guests who want to enjoy local food in a home atmosphere.
“Basically, I cook for guests and then sit down and enjoy the meal with them,’’ said Siew, adding that she learnt cooking from her grandmother and mother and also learnt to experiment with some recipes on her own.
She also writes a food blog, which she says keeps her motivated to try new recipes.
“I have joined a couple of cooking and baking competitions and was first runner-up in both the Nutriplus Pastry Competition and Simplot Food Blogger Cook Competition,’’ she added.
On her plans for the future, Siew said she did not think too much about it.
“I’ll take whatever comes my way and make the most of it.”
