Gas the way to go: Bahar (right) explaining the NGV tank installation process to vehicle owner Mustaffa Idris.
JOHOR BARU: Specialists installing natural gas for vehicles (NGV) equipment in the state are expecting a jump in demand as a result of the 20 sen increase of RON95 petrol and diesel prices.
D Bayu Indah Enterprise Sdn Bhd owner Bahar Burham said his NGV equipment company had received more enquiries from motorists on his product following Monday night’s announcement.
“We have received over 10 calls from car owners making enquiries on the charges for NGV installations a day after the increase took effect.
“Previously, we would receive an average of two to three calls per month,” he said yesterday.
He added that although each conversion could cost up to RM4,500, car owners did not mind forking out the sum as it would translate in cost savings in the long run.
NGV technician Ibrahim Hasbollah has so far received three bookings for tank conversion.
“The price for conversion will depend on the cars’ engine system and the capacity of the NGV tanks,” he said, adding that he charges between RM2,800 and RM5,000 for each installation.
In Petaling Jaya, Malaysian NGV Sdn Bhd president Rahmat Ahmad complained that not much has been done to promote the use of gas as an alternative fuel despite the country being a major gas producer.
“Since NGV was introduced here 16 years ago, there are only about 50,000 NGV vehicles nationwide, of which 90% are taxis.
“We are lagging way behind Pakistan, where there are some three million NGV vehicles,” he added.
Rahmat said there are 157 Petronas stations offering NGV compared to Pakistan where there are some 600 stations or Thailand which has 300.
He suggested that the Government provide incentives such as full road tax exemption for NGV vehicles and tax relief for the NGV industry players.
