Safely home: The last batch of Malaysians aboard AirAsia X’s third and final rescue flight mission arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport from Cairo.
SEPANG: It was a joyful reunion for 380 Malaysians who flew home on AirAsia X’s last evacuation flight from Egypt.
After a 10-hour journey from Cairo, the special flight arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 6.15am yesterday.
This was AirAsia X’s third and final flight carrying Malaysian students, families and those working in Egypt, which has been embroiled in turmoil after the country’s military-backed government pressed on with its crackdown on protesters.
Contractor Mohd Taufit Ayob, 41, said that it was a relief to finally see his 19-year-old son Mohd Azizul Syazwan who had been studying in Cairo for six years.
Taufit, his wife and their daughter drove from Sungai Petani in Kedah just to pick up Azizul.
“He was supposed to arrive the previous day. But after waiting at the airport in Cairo the whole day, he was moved to today’s flight because there was not enough seats (on the previous flight),” said Taufit.
He said that his son was reluctant to return as he had just sat for the Al-Azhar University entrance examination and was awaiting his results.
“He has been preparing for university since he was 13. He felt that it was a waste if he cannot enrol in the university because of the evacuation,” he added.
