Khairy suggests Info Dept hold outdoor screening of Tanda Putera

KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has suggested that the Information Department organise outdoor screenings of the controversial film Tanda Putera in Penang.

Khairy also urged cinema operators to ignore the request by the Penang government not to screen the movie in the state's cinemas.

"If there is any (continued) action to block the film from being screened in Penang, I ask the Information Department to organise mobile outdoor screenings (wayang pacak) in every field in Penang.

"I hope that cinemas in Penang will continue with their screening of Tanda Putera," he told reporters at the ministry's Hari Raya Open House Thursday.

Earlier, Golden Screen Cinemas said it would not be screening the movie at its two cineplexes in Penang.

Khairy encouraged all Malaysians to watch the film.

"I have watched the film. It tells the story of two great statesmen who saved our country after the May 13th incident.

"If we do feel angry after watching the film we do not feel anger towards any race but towards the Communist terrorists."

He said that if any part of the movie showed a creative license in depicting some of the events in its storyline, then that was something normal in any films based on historical events.

"But to me it is highly illogical for DAP, a party which supposedly champions democracy and freedom of expression to suddenly ask that the movie not be shown in cinemas.

"That to me is double standard," he said.
