MUAR: Eight relatives travelling together in a MPV was involved in an accident along KM14 Jalan Tangkak-Muar here, killing five while three escaped with injuries.
It was learnt they were on their way back to Johor from Kuantan when the driver apparently fell asleep and rammed the car into the trailer, parked on the opposite lane of the trunk road at around 5.50am Wednesday.
One survivor, student Siti Nur Shuhada Abdul Rahman, was devastated after learning that her family members, including her mother, perished in the tragedy.
She said that they had left Kuantan at around 3am after paying respects to a relative who recently passed away.
"I had only realised what had happened when I woke up and saw strangers carrying me and my relatives out of the crushed vehicle. I cannot believe that my mother and relatives are gone," she said.
She suffered from minor injuries while her sisters Siti Nur Ain, 21, broke her leg and Siti Hajar, in her twenties, sustained severe injuries to her head and had yet to regain consciousness.
Shuhada’s mother, Mahani Othman, 56, and uncle Basiron Kasiran, 74, died at the hospital while her aunts Rokiah Othman, 62, and Jasilah Othman, 42 and a relative Ramlah Abu Bakar, 66, died on the spot.
Meanwhile, Ledang OCPD Supt Harun Idris said that while Mahani and Basiron died at about 8am after receiving treatment at the Hospital Pakar Sultanah Fatimah here.
Supt Harun said that sisters Siti Nur Ain and Shuhada were in stable condition while Siti Hajar was in critical condition and still unconscious.
