Celebrate Merdeka!: Mat Osman cruising on his trishaw around Kuantan while flying Jalur Gemilang of all sizes on his trishaw.
KUANTAN: Trishaw peddler Mat Osman cycles around town every day, covering about 5km in a day’s work.
The senior citizen, who takes pride in his job, also makes sure that the Jalur Gemilang is prominently displayed on his trishaw.
“I want to help remind people about the coming Merdeka celebrations,” said Mat, 62, who is married with two grown up children.
Mat, who has been a trishawman for the past three decades, said he found it upsetting that not many people were now displaying the Malaysian flag.
“Previously, I noticed that the buildings in town are full of the national flags, making Kuantan colourful. It does not seem to be this way anymore,” he said.
“Don’t we have the spirit of celebrating Independence Day?” he asked.
However, Mat said he would keep going although many of his friends had given up being a trishaw peddler.
“Many of my them have retired due to old age.
“Besides, it is no longer practical to pedal a trishaw on the streets of Kuantan due to the heavy traffic,” he said.
