KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Urban Development Authority should reaffirm its original role of helping bumiputra entrepreneurs in the urban areas.
The Deputy Prime Minister said one pressing issue that UDA should look into was to identify the cause for and resolve the high shophouse rentals bumiputra entrepreneurs had to bear in major cities.
“Maybe, it is time that UDA reviewed its role to enable it to fulfil its original objective of providing opportunities to bumiputra entrepreneurs to excel in business, especially in large towns and cities,” he said at a Hari Raya open house organised by the Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMM) here yesterday.
Muhyiddin urged the chamber to work with the Government to develop affordable housing for the people to ensure that the global economic slowdown did not have a negative impact on Malaysia’s economy.
He said one of the more pressing issues currently faced by the people was the price of houses.
“The Malays living in big cities and areas near large towns and cities are feeling the pinch,” Muhyiddin pointed out.
Earlier Muhyiddin praised Kumpulan Perubatan Johor (KPJ) Healthcare Berhad corporate advisor Datin Paduka Siti Sadiah Sheikh Bakir for her loyalty and dedication to the healthcare industry. He said the non-executive director of KPJ Healthcare had expanded and transformed the landscape in the private healthcare industry in the country.
“I am very impressed, from the time of the involvement of Johor Corporation in the healthcare industry in 1979 until today,” he said.
“The group today earns more than RM2bil in annual revenue and has gained a market capitalisation of more than RM4bil. All these were achieved and accomplished within 30 years of the company’s existence, driven by the vision and passion of Datin Paduka,” he said at the launch of Siti Sadiah’s biography here.
