Ops Cantas: 159 detained in Kelantan

KOTA BARU: A nine-day 'Ops Cantas' in Kelantan this month saw 159 people detained by the police for various crimes.

Since the operation began on Aug 17, police have nabbed 28 suspects for offences involving firearms and ammunition while the rest were drug-related.

Kelantan police deputy chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim said a total of 798 people were screened in the operation.

"We also seized eight cars out of the 635 vehicles screened, and seized 182 methampetamine pills in raids state-wide," he told a press conference at the state police contingent headquarters here Sunday.

On Wednesday, Mazlan said police had detained five men and a woman, aged between 20 and 55, in three separate cases for possession of firearms and ammunition.

Also seized from the suspects, which included a woman and her son, were two homemade guns, 312 bullets and 18 other bullets made from tin.

The tin bullets were believed to have been obtained from a neighbouring country.

Meanwhile, Mazlan said the police were in the midst of tracking down two men, who robbed a petrol kiosk in Kampung Kasar, Pasir Mas on Thursday. - Bernama
