GEORGE TOWN: DAP chairman Karpal Singh has challenged Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department P. Waythamoorthy to step down from his ministerial post.
"That (resign) is what he should do. This is the best cause of action in view of public interest.
"Since his stand is incongruous with that of police, I challenge him to step down from his ministerial post," said Karpal during a press conference at a coffee shop in Air Itam on Saturday.
He said as a man of principle, Waythamoorthy should do just that since the call allegedly came from Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Although Dr Ahmad Zahid did not specifically name Waythamoorthy, he reportedly inferred that "an individual who once led an NGO" should relinquish his post since his view was at odds with the Government and police over the shooting of five gang members at an apartment in Sungai Nibong on Monday.
Waythamoorthy was quoted as saying that based on photographs where the shooting took place, he believed that the five victims were shot at by the police from close range.
On Monday, five suspected gang members - J. Gobinath, 31, R. Ramesh, 27, N. Rakan, 25, M. Suresh, 25, and M. Gobinath, 21 - were shot dead by the police, believed linked to nine out of 19 shooting cases this year.
Karpal also called upon the Attorney-General to carry out an inquest into the event.
"The family members have a right to know what had actually happened.
"The police too, should have no fear if they have done the right thing.
"The police must realise their action could result in reprisal (from gang members). It could be avoided.
"There could be revenge and the life of other policemen might be at risk," he added.
On the party's central executive committee re-election to be held on Sept 29, Karpal said an international auditing firm would be appointed to oversee it.
"We want to ensure that everything is in order. We are merely doing what we have been directed by the Registrar of Societies.
