POLICE have arrested the widow of the founder of the deviant Al-Arqam sect over allegations that funds meant for an orphanage were misused.
Hatijah Aam (pic), the widow to the late Ashaari Muhammad, was arrested after she presented herself at the office of the Selangor Religious Authority in Shah Alam on Thursday, Berita Harian reported.
Commercial Crime Investigation Department Director Comm Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said Hatijah was arrested to assist investigations under the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act (AMLATFA) 2001.
“The police view seriously cases of misuse of funds meant for orphans as it involves public interest,” Comm Syed Ismail said.
The arrest followed several police reports lodged by individuals, including former members of a company set up by former Al-Arqam followers, on the alleged misuse of funds.

The victim’s wife Noraini Wai Abdullah, 28, said her husband was sleeping in their home at Bandar Puchong Jaya, Selangor, when the employer turned up at their house on Tuesday.
“He was very angry and immediately attacked my husband,” she said.
The report said the 27-year-old victim quit his job at the shop after his employer failed to pay him his salary.
The couple managed to flee from the house before seeking help from friends to contact the police. The attacker was later arrested by police.
