KUALA LUMPUR: The Prime Minister has called on the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) to play a key role in resolving conflict plaguing the Muslim world.
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said IIUM could provide the intellectual impetus for world Muslim leaders to come together to find solutions to conflicts tormenting the ummah worldwide.
“We should not allow other considerations to divide us,” he said yesterday when opening the inaugural World Congress on Integration and Islamicisation of Acquired Human Knowledge.
He said it was time to act decisively, promote a sense of togetherness and put an end to sectarian violence.
Najib also launched the proposed RM800mil IIUM Islamic City that would be built at the fringe of the campus in Gombak within five to seven years. He also declared IIUM as a premier international Islamic university.
“This distinction will certainly generate international discourse,” he said.
He said the Islamic City would bear witness to the progress of Malaysia as a modern state that truly embodied the values of a moderate Islam.
The three-day congress ends tomorrow.
