Thieves break into Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Queen Street

GEORGE TOWN: The famous Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Queen Street was broken into, and burglars have allegedly escaped with several gold items.

It is learnt that the suspects had come in via the grill door behind the temple.

The tables and deities were smashed during the incident. 

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said police received a break-in report at about 7am on Friday.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for burglary, adding that the value of the losses has yet to be ascertained.

Policemen are now conducting checks at the scene.
