PETALING JAYA: After weeks of sifting through more than 51,000 entries, judges for this year’s NiE contest, entitled Tale Spin 2013, have finally picked six finalists.
The six will pit against each other in a “live presentation” next month.
The contest, organised by Star-NiE (Newspaper-in-Education) and Pizza Hut, was based on the storyboarding concept with characters from movies, fiction and other genres.
Judges at the shortlisting were Pizza Hut marketing manager Yoko Neng and senior marketing executive Michelle Wong; Taylor’s School of Communication dean Josephine Tan; Ogilvy & Mather creative director Andrew Loh, planning director Ajay Bangia and account manager Sumana Ratilal; and The Star deputy group chief editor (II) Leanne Goh and NiE editorial manager Sharon Ovinis.
They were thoroughly impressed with the quality of the artwork and originality of the shortlisted entries for merit awards.
While the storyboards – ending with a cliffhanger – cut across an extensive array of genres, from fantasy and sci-fi to comedy and manga, most entries reflect on well-loved genres in today’s teenage culture.
“With the storyboard concept, you can see that students are able to create stories along the lines of their own natural interest. A lot of the entries are tied to popular elements that they like, such as vampires and Harry Potter. They’re bringing together their favourite characters and drawing styles,” said Goh.
Among the selection criteria were creativity, coherence, content and proper use of language.
In the grand finale, two teams from each category – Primary, Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary – will “present” the conclusion based on the cliffhanger.
Among the prizes are RM150,000 worth of scholarships from Taylor’s University; all-expenses paid trips to Hong Kong Disneyland, courtesy of The Star and Pizza Hut; and a holiday to Genting, sponsored by Resorts World Genting.
In the video category, three finalists were chosen from 850 entries.
