ALOR SETAR: The mongrel whose fierce barking alerted a senior citizen to a fire in her rented house in Kampung Seberang Nyonya here has found a new home.
Cheong Yit Foon, 63, the daughter of dog owner Wong Kan Ho, 85, said the family has decided to give Kau Chai (Cantonese for little dog) away to a neighbour as they could no longer care for her.
“We can no longer take care of Kau Chai since we are uncertain of where we are going to stay in the aftermath of the fire that gutted our rented house,” said Cheong, who added that the family was now living in a relative’s shophouse until they can find a new roof over their heads.
It was reported that the fire razed the double-story wooden house on Tuesday at about 10.15am.
Wong was praying at the back of her house when Kau Chai started barking fiercely.
Suspecting something was amiss inside the house, she entered through the back door and saw smoke and flames inside.
It was reported that Wong, Cheong and Cheong’s daughter Ooi Chin Siew, 35, and her husband and their child had lived in the rented house for more than 10 years.
Cheong said she had informed the neighbour of the kind of food that Kau Chai likes.
“Kau Chai has been with the family since it was a puppy, and she loves chicken.
“I took it from a friend because I wanted it to keep my mother company at home,” she said.
