KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has withdrawn his defamation suit against PKR strategic director Mohd Rafizi Ramli.
This happened after Rafizi read out a statement in court yesterday admitting that he unequivocally and unconditionally withdrew the wrongful statements made against Zahid.
“I am satisfied with the explanation given by Dr Zahid Hamidi that he had not abused his powers in any matter whatsoever and had no role whatsoever in the decision of Boustead Holdings Bhd to enter into transactions to acquire Astacanggih Sdn Bhd’s shares and development lands from Awan Megah Sdn Bhd as stated in my article dated Dec 29 last year,” said Rafizi as he read out his statement.
In his suit, Zahid had alleged that an article in Rafizi’s blog had linked him to land deals related to businessman Deepak Jaikishan.
Zahid’s lead counsel Datuk Saseedharan Menon said his client accepted the statement and had withdrawn his claim. Rafizi’s lawyer Razlan Hadri confirmed it.
High Court Judicial Commissioner Lee Heng Cheong struck out the suit but did not make any order on costs.
Zahid told The Star he settled the civil dispute on a goodwill basis.
“I have even written a letter to the Prime Minister that I have to be in court for this case as we have a Cabinet meeting today (Wed),” he added.
Speaking to reporters later, Rafizi said the withdrawal was not an apology.
“This is (a) withdrawal of (an) inaccurate statement. I made the statement with the information available at that time, and I had no malicious intent,” he said.
In the suit, Zahid said Rafizi had falsely and maliciously written and published the article in his blog.
Zahid argued the article meant that he had misused public funds, particularly the contributions of army personnel in Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (Armed Forces Pension Fund Board), and had sought damages, retraction of all defamatory comments as well as a public apology in four newspapers for two consecutive days.
