KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil is not an adviser to the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, says minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim.
Shahrizat, who used to be the minister, was reported to have been appointed special adviser to the Prime Minister on women’s affairs.
“She is not an adviser to my ministry. That is definite. That (her appointment) is under the Prime Minister’s Department so I cannot comment,” said Rohani during a press conference at the 11th Women’s Summit yesterday.
When asked about Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz’s statement that he believed the Prime Minister had appointed Shahrizat to help her, Rohani said: “That is his opinion.”
The Star reported yesterday that Shahrizat had been appointed special adviser to the Prime Minister to oversee the development of women entrepreneurs and professionals.
It is understood that the appointment took effect on Aug 15.
A news portal reported that Nazri supported Shahrizat’s appointment, saying it was “not morally wrong” despite the events that led to her relinquishing her Cabinet post when her senatorship ended on April 8 last year.
He said Shahrizat’s appointment was based on merit, highlighting her vast experience as the past Women, Family and Community Development Minister.
Nazri claimed that Shahrizat’s experience was needed to guide her successor and that it should override public scepticism on the former minister’s integrity.
