A wow factor: The construction of the retractable roof was part of PHC’s effort to make visitors more comfortable.
GEORGE TOWN: Visitors to Penang Hill can now be sheltered from the elements with the installation of a retractable roof at the lower station.
The improvement is part of the RM3.7mil upgrading project for the lower and upper stations.
“The construction of the roof was completed within 10 months, and its objective is to provide shelter as well as an extension of the station to accommodate more visitors,” said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng during the launch of the retractable roof.
Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) general manager Dr Lawrence Khoo said the construction of the retractable roof was part of PHC’s effort to make visitors more comfortable, while the introduction of the fast ticketing system had also reduced queuing time.
“We achieved our first ‘wow factor’ with a record 10,301 visitors on the second day of Hari Raya,” he said.
According to Dr Khoo, a 80m-long elevated walkway at the hill’s upper station, a new canopy walk as well as a nature trail were scheduled to be completed next year.
“With the new attractions, we hope to draw more visitors to the ‘Peak of the Pearl’,” he said.
