Raja Nong Chik vs Nurul Izzah - court advises settlement of defamation suit

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Cabinet minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin has been advised to settle his defamation suit against Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar and two others over the sale of land in Bukit Kiara.

High Court judge Justice Yeoh Wee Siam has asked the parties involved in the civil dispute to find a way to resolve the suit.

Speaking to reporters here Monday, Raja Nong Chik's lawyer M. Reza Hassan said the judge advised them to settle the civil suit on their own or through a mediation process.

"The mediation process could be done before her or at the mediation centre at the court here," he said after the judge issued the order in chambers.

Reza said his client has also been asked to reply to their defence statement by Sept 16, to enable the case management to be held the next day.

In his suit filed on July 19, Raja Nong Chik  sought a court order to force the defendants to publish an apology based on his terms.

Apart from applying for an injunction to stop the defendants from publishing any libellous words against him, he is asking for general, aggravated and exemplary damages, interests and costs.

He named Nurul Izzah, online news publisher Mkini Dotcom Sdn Bhd and its reporter Lu Wei Hoong as defendants in his suit.

The former senator said Nurul Izzah made libellous and false statements against him at a press conference on May 4.

Nurul Izzah, he noted, made similar statements, published in the Malaysiakini online news portal in two versions – Bahasa Malaysia and English – on the same day.

He said the words implied that he had misused his position as Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister for his personal interest and gain.

Raja Nong Chik said the publication had caused his reputation and dignity as a politician, minister and senator to be tarnished.

He said his credibility had been ruined, especially among the voters of the Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency.

(Nurul Izzah received 31,008 votes, beating Raja Nong Chik with a majority of 1,847 votes in the 13th general election held on May 5.)
