PETALING JAYA: DAP’s decision to hold fresh central executive committee (CEC) elections showed that its December election was filled with defects, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.
Khairy said DAP’s announcement that it would hold fresh elections was an “admission of guilt”.
The Youth and Sports Minister also questioned the party’s delay in deciding to submit to the order to hold fresh elections, which was called for by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) on July 30.
“Finally, they have admitted they were wrong in this matter (but) I don’t know what took them so long to arrive at this decision.
“This was made an issue even before and during the general election, (with claims) that ROS will de-register DAP to gain public sympathy towards the party.
“This is clear that they (DAP) only know how to politicise decisions made by government agencies and in the end, when they’ve got no choice, they agree to it,” Khairy said Thursday.
DAP chairman Karpal Singh had issued a statement on Wednesday saying that the CEC of term 2008-2011 had resolved to hold fresh elections in the larger interests of the party and to avert the de-registration of the party.
The CEC is expected to convene a meeting next Thursday to prepare for the new elections, after weeks of protest against the ROS order to call for fresh elections of the CEC.
The protest came following a statement made by ROS director-general Datuk Abdul Rahman Othman, who said he was not satisfied with the explanation given by the party on the “technical glitch” that cropped up in last December’s CEC election.
Abdul Rahman did not offer any other reason for the order to call for fresh elections.
The CEC election turned controversial when Zairil Khir Johari, who is party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s political secretary, obtained 803 votes after a retabulation of the vote count using a spreadsheet, as compared to 305 in the initial count.
The revised result saw Zairil landing himself one of the 20 slots in CEC.
