Chua: Many factors behind brain drain

PUTRAJAYA: One cannot pinpoint a single factor behind Malaysia's brain drain problem as there is a combination of factors at work, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

Dr Chua was referring to Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew's comment in his book, One Man's View of the World, where Lee said the acute brain drain problem in Malaysia was due to the Government's insistence on promoting "one race above others".

"I do not totally agree with Lee Kuan Yew. There are other factors at play, such as better pay, work environment, infrastructure and security.

"It is a combination of factors, so we cannot single out one factor as the cause of brain drain," he said when met at the Prime Minister's Hari Raya open house here Thursday.

On the Hari Raya celebrations, Dr Chua said open houses gave the rakyat an opportunity to meet and mingle on good terms, which would increase the understanding of different races and cultures.

"Lately, some incidents have shown that although we have been independent for nearly 60 years, the rakyat have yet to understand Muslim sensitivities and vice versa.

"This has become an opportunity for the Opposition, which is exploiting this weakness for its political gains," he added.

Dr Chua expressed hope that the tradition of open house will help in strengthening the ties between the races, as lack of understanding could lead to conflicts which often have no basis.
