KOTA KINABALU: A 44-year-old businessman was killed in a drive-by shooting as he walked out of a Indian Muslim cofeeshop at Beverly Hills commercial complex in Penampang at about 10.15pm Saturday.

The man was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital by a police patrol car, but pronounced dead early Sunday morning.

Police have yet to disclose the identity of the  businessman, who they say was just leaving the coffee shop after having drinks with a few friends.

When he left, an unidentified man in a waiting car shot him in the abdomen and immediately sped off.

A nearby police patrol car heard the gunshot and immediately arrived on scene, rushing the man to the hospital.

The police immediately set up road blocks across the city in a bid to capture the assailants.

It is understood that police are also recording the statements of the friends of the businessman.
