PETALING JAYA: A lawyer of dog trainer Maznah Mohd Yusof has criticised a deputy minister for saying that she is "morally defective" and "requires rehabilitation."
Latheefa Koya said the statement by Communications and Multimedia Deputy Minister Jailani Johari was prejudicial to Maznah's legal rights as a person under investigation.
Jailani was quoted as saying that Maznah required rehabilitation by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) for "morally defective" behaviour.
Maznah, also known as Chetz, had been at the centre of a social media storm after a video of her celebrating Hari Raya with her dogs, which was made three years ago, was uploaded to YouTube last week.
She was arrested on Wednesday and brought to Segamat before being released on a court bond on Friday.
Latheefa said Jailani's statement was "mischievous, baseless and prejudicial to Chetz Yusof's legal rights."
"We are shocked that the Ministry has made a public attack upon the conduct and morals of a private individual,” she said in a statement with another lawyer N.Surendran.
“This spirit of intolerance and bigotry is unacceptable and un-Malaysian,” they said.
They demanded that Jailani immediately withdraw his remarks against Chetz.
Meanwhile, Latheefa said she would be meeting Maznah soon to discuss legal matters.
