PETALING JAYA: Malaysians in strife-torn Egypt are safe following the deadly clashes between security forces of supporters of deposed President Mohamed Mursi which has left dozens killed.
"To date, all Malaysians in Egypt remain safe and they have been constantly advised to adhere to the security guidelines issued by the Embassy of Malaysia in Cairo and the local authorities,” Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said in a statement on Sunday.
“They have also been advised to stay away from the conflict areas and not to participate in any demonstrations,” he added.
He said the Government here was deeply concerned with the on-going situation in Egypt that have led to the loss of many lives and injuries to thousand others.
“Malaysia hopes that an amicable solution could be achieved and urges all parties to refrain from violence,” he said.
He urged the authorities there to start dialogues with affected parties aimed at formulating a workable and lasting solution to the end the current conflict.
He assured that Wisma Putra would continue to monitor the situation very closely to ensure the safety and security of all Malaysians in Egypt.
There are some 10,O00 Malaysians studying in Egypt and with many living a distance from the conflict zones.
Saturday’s bloodshed follows huge rival rallies with armed clashes reported to have taken place between security forces, residents and protestors.
A Reuters report stated that Egypt’s Health Ministry put the death toll at 65 while The Brotherhood claimed that 61 others were on life support. The ambulance service however put the death toll at 72.
