PETALING JAYA: A 21-year-old student, who won the second prize in a worldwide YouTube talent contest, dreams of becoming the first “singing dentist” in Malaysia.

Muhammad Hafiz Zainal came second in the Awakening Talent Contest on July 14 after worldwide audiences and four judges, including famed religious singer Maher Zain, were impressed by his performances.

“Nowadays, we have many local singers who are highly-educated,” Muhammad Hafiz said. “So, I would like to be the first singing dentist because we already have a cooking dentist through Masterchef Malaysia Season One.

“Moreover, I want to prove that anyone can achieve their dreams regardless of their education background.”

Muhammad Hafiz was initially disappointed over not being crowned the winner, which would have clinched him a record deal with Awakening Records.

However, he said, he started looking on the bright side, thanks to the people who believed in him.

The Johor Baru-born lad, a second-year dentistry student at Alexandria University in Egypt, said he had gained numerous supporters around the world and learnt several lessons over the course of the contest.

“This (the contest) will guide me in my journey in the music industry,” he said, adding that his prize included a chance to perform “live” with one of Awakening’s artistes, including Maher Zain.

“I hope I will get to sing live with Maher Zain. He is my idol.”

Muhammad Hafiz said he would pursue a singing career but without neglecting his dental studies.

“Winning second place has fuelled my passion to improve myself. I will keep on singing, no matter what,” he added.

On his family members’ reaction to his singing career, he said they were supportive.

“My mum is very happy and proud of me. She told me that some of her friends watched my video together in the office during their break,” he said, adding that he would continue to upload more songs on his YouTube channel www.youtube.com/yohafiz92.
