PETALING JAYA: One rainy morning in January, a stray puppy crawled through the fence of a house in Pudu and refused to leave even when its mother whined for it to follow her.
The house owner, who was not able to adopt the puppy, contacted canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) to seek help to find the puppy a home.
This signalled the beginning of Toby and his mother Chinta’s journey to a home in San Bruno, North California, United States.
They left Kuala Lumpur for San Francisco on Monday night and were scheduled to arrive there last night.
“We lured the mother at the house in Pudu and sent her for neutering under our Trap-Neuter-Release-Manage (TNRM) programme and put the puppy up for adoption,’’ said MDDB rescue coordinator Irene Low.
“We trapped the mother again and sent her and the puppy to a foster home where they stayed while receiving all the necessary vaccinations pending their flight to the United States.
Low added the dogs were transferred to MDDB rehabilitation coordinator Derene Lee’s house, after their vaccinations were over, to be trained to endure the long flight to their new home.
Low said MDDB hoped to get more dogs adopted overseas.
Meanwhile, Toby and Chinta’s adopters Ray and Diana Levinson are eagerly waiting for the dogs’ arrival.
“I have prepared some special home-cooked meals for a ‘welcome to USA’ party on July 27,’’ said Diane, who is a neonatal intensive care nurse, when contacted via Facebook.
Ray, who is a University of San Francisco adjunct professor have two other adopted Shar Pei that were also formerly strays.
