KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Rakyat will declare its stand on the controversial Administration of Religion of Islam (Federal Territories) Bill 2013 after consulting with its top leadership.
Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Pakatan leadership was studying the Bill thoroughly.
"I have had initial discussions with (PAS president) Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, PKR and (DAP secretary-general) Lim Guan Eng to get an understanding before we give a public response on the issue," he told reporters when met at the Parliament lobby on Tuesday.
Anwar said he was also meeting representatives from non-governmental organisations including former Bar Council president Datuk S. Ambiga to discuss the Bill.
"We (Pakatan) will decide by next week or so because we still have time (to go through the Bill)," he said.
Among others, the Bill allows a person below the age of 18 to convert into Islam if one parent or guardian consents to the conversion under Section 107.
It also proposes that the Syariah High Court can declare that a person is no longer a Muslim and whether a deceased person was a Muslim or not at the time of death.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin assured that all parties would be consulted before making any decision on the Bill.
Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Datuk Ronald Kiandee said unless it is withdrawn, the Bill was expected to be tabled for second and third reading before the current meeting ends on July 18.
