KOTA KINABALU: Sex stimulants of dubious origin is being openly sold at sidewalks in parts of the city's downtown area and other smaller town and medical professionals are worried, a state assemblyman told the Sabah State Assembly on Wednesday.
Datuk Joniston Bangkuai (BN-Kiulu) said among these items were flavoured condoms and sexual enhancement drugs.
Debating the Government's policy speech, he said these stimulants were being sold near cheap hotels or lodging houses.
"This situation will only lead to sex crimes including rape or casual sex that could involve underaged youths," Joniston added.
"Some quarters may view this as a minor problem, but if left unchecked could lead to serious social problems," he added.
On another matter, Joniston suggested that fire extinguishers are provided to rural families living far away from a fire station as this would enable to do something in the event a fire broke out.
He said a fire extinguisher that costs about RM160 was a minor expenditure compared to a house and property costing about RM50,000 to RM100,000.
Joniston noted that there was three fire incidents over the past two months in his constituency located some 40kms from the city.
Datuk Shamsuddin Yahya also asked the government to decide on whether the uses of electronic cigarettes were safe.
He said the government should ban the sale of such items if they were found to be detrimental to health.
"The Health Ministry has issued warnings about the use these electronic cigarettes but these items are still widely sold even at night markets and sidewalks," he said in adding that teenagers were among the users of these items.
In another development, Shamsuddin suggested that the headquarters of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) be relocated from Lahad Datu to Sanndakan.
He said the move to Sandakan would enable Esscom to benefit from better infrastructure and logistics that were available in the east coast town.
