Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar.
IPOH: All state police chiefs have been instructed to increase security at ceramah venues after an explosion at a Barisan Nasional ceremah in Nibong Tebal on Tuesday.
"We will increase security before and during a ceramah, which is why we ask all political parties to inform us of their ceramah," Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said.
"I want to assure the public that we have everything under control and are using all elements within the police force to apprehend the culprit.
"I'm issuing a warning to whoever is responsible, surrender before we apprehend you," he said in a press conference after visiting the Perak contingent here Wednesday.
Ismail said early investigations revealed that the explosion was caused by a "homemade explosive".
"Only one victim sustained minor injuries, but the explosive was made to harm and possibly kill,"he said.
On Tuesday night, a blast occurred at the Barisan ceramah in Taman Jawi Jaya in Nibong Tebal, where Penang Gerakan chairman Datuk Teng Hock Nan was speaking to about 3,000 people.
One party worker was slightly injured, it was reported.
Police said Wednesday the explosion was caused by an IED (improvised explosive device), adding that they found another similar device at the scene.
