KUALA LUMPUR: PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa is expecting to face Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor in the contest for Putrajaya.
“I don't think Tengku will run away. For sure I will face him. If he is not fielded as a candidate, people will say Umno and Barisan are chickening out,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.
Husam said he was conscious of the uphill task he would be facing.
“People have been telling me that and I have told them I am aware of it,” he said.
He acknowledged that Putrajaya was a Barisan stronghold with Tengku Adnan receiving good support from voters there.
“He (Tengku) has worked very hard and invested a lot of his time, energy and attention there with Putrajaya seen as an Umno and Barisan base,” he said.
Though a recent survey tipped Pakatan as having 60% support over Barisan's 40% in Putrajaya, Husam thought otherwise, saying that Tengku Adnan had the edge.
“I will rate support for Pakatan at 45% and 55% for Barisan,” he added.
However, he said that there were indications that the civil servants voting in Putrajaya would give the Opposition their silent support via their votes on May 5.
“Nothing is impossible,” he said, adding that PAS' decision to field him in Putrajaya was based on the party's confidence in bringing change to the administrative capital.
Tengku Adnan, better known as Ku Nan, became Putrajaya's first MP when he defeated PKR's Abdul Rahman Othman with a majority of 3,546 votes in the 2004 polls.
He successfully defended his seat against PAS Mohammad Nor Mohamad in March 2008 with a reduced 2,724 majority in the constituency with Malays comprising 94% of its voters.
In February, Tengku Adnan expressed appreciation for Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's confidence in him to defend the seat.
He added that, however, the final decision over his candidacy rested with Najib.
