JOHOR BARU: State Barisan Nasional leaders have dared DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang to stand in any seat in Johor in the coming general election.
They also “welcome” other Pakatan Rakyat leaders to test their luck in the state.
Johor Baru MP Tan Sri Shahrir Samad said Barisan was ready for anything and well-prepared to face the Opposition even if they were to field their national leaders in the state.
“Johor has done tremendously well over the years, especially in Johor Baru, due to the fast development of Iskandar Malaysia which has attracted billions worth of investments.
“The people of Johor have seen the positive changes through Iskandar Malaysia which offers employment besides world-class education for the locals here,” he said after attending SJK(C) Foon Yew 4 Parent-Teacher Association's meeting here yesterday.
It was reported that Lim will be contesting in Johor, confirming speculation that he will go to the southern state to boost the party's chances in the general election.
Shahrir said that Lim's decision had no bearing on the state Barisan's election preparations.
“What can he bring to boost development in the state? Johor has done well over the years without the Opposition's presence,” he said.
However, he said it was up to the voters to decide which party could better represent them and shape the state's future.
Besides Lim, PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub has also shown interest in contesting in Johor.
Nusajaya assemblyman Datuk Aziz Sapian, meanwhile, urged voters to reject “outsiders” and those who did not understand the needs of the people in the state.
“What makes the Opposition think that the people want to see an unfamiliar face, an outsider to come into their area and lead them?” he said in his speech at a 1Malaysia gathering in Nusajaya attended by people from Tanjung Kupang, Kampung Ladang and Pendas on Saturday night.
Gelang Patah MCA division chief Jason Teoh, who was at the same gathering, also stressed the importance of supporting Barisan to ensure a better future.
