KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional will answer and fight allegations made by the Opposition via the social media with facts and evidence.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the ruling coalition was faced with a great challenge in reaching the minds and hearts of social media users.

“The cyber world is the Opposition's mainstream media as they have been using this platform for a long time,” he said at the launch of the BN Youth Cyber Activists gathering yesterday.

“In the cyber world, we (Barisan) are the away team' and there is nothing better than winning in your opponent's home ground.”

More than 500 Barisan “cyber activists”, who have been trained in disseminating information related to the programmes and successes of the Barisan-led government, attended the event here.

“I expect that the Opposition will be going on a negative campaign, leading up to the general election, to attack Barisan,” Khairy said. “It is crucial for us to respond to these attacks with facts and evidence.”

At the same event, Khairy also launched the “BN Youth” mobile application, which has been made available on Android.

Khairy said they were in the midst of developing the application, which will feature news and updates on issues related to the general election, for the iOS platform as well.

Later at a press conference, Khairy said facts and evidence were not enough to win the hearts of social media users.

“The method of delivering these facts will determine whether we can win the hearts and minds of voters,” he said, adding that the cyber activists would share information on Barisan's policies, track record and success stories.

He said over 3,000 cyber activists had been trained to share this information on blogs and social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter.
