KOTA BARU: Kelantan police will boost security surveillance along the Malaysia-Thai border to check the entry of terrorists from the southern Thailand-based National Revolutionary Front (BRN).
State police chief Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said police would work with the Malaysian Armed Forces, Anti-Smuggling Unit and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency under Ops Wawasan for this purpose.
"We will also cooperate with Thai security forces to detect the militants who are trying to escape to this country," he told a press conference here Thursday.
Thai newspapers reported Friday that 17 rebels were killed in a firefight with Thai security forces after they were trapped by the soldiers while launching an ambush on a navy camp in Narathiwat Wednesday.
Narathiwat navy commander Kol Somkiat Ponprayoon said some 50 fully-armed rebels in army uniforms and bullet-proof jackets from BRN raided the small camp in which were 50 officers and personnel, around 1am.
No Thai soldier was killed in the incident, according to the reports.
Unrest in three regions in southern Thailand has taken place almost daily since the rebellion broke out in 2004, killing more than 5,000. - Bernama
