PETALING JAYA: Four people, including the mother of local actress Catriona Ross, were killed in two separate accidents in Perak and Malacca in the last 48 hours.
Four others were seriously injured in the accidents — involving a car and a bus at KM61 of the East-West Highway and a car and a lorry near Bertam Hulu in Malacca.
In the first accident along the East-West Highway, Catriona’s mother Siti Zawiyah Abdul Rahman, 63, and two others, Sitah Abdullah, 53, and Norini Abdul Ghani, 43, died at the scene when the car they were in crashed head on with a bus.
Car driver Mustapa Che Su, 54, was seriously injured while the bus driver and passengers were unhurt.
Gerik OCPD Supt Abdul Manab Baharum said the car collided with the bus travelling from Gerik to Jeli at about 1am yesterday.
“Early investigations show that the Proton Saga was overtaking a few cars when it crashed into the bus. The impact caused the car to be thrown into a drain,” he said.
He said the bodies had been sent to Gerik Hospital for post-mortem and were released to their families at around 10am.
Mustapa was sent to Taiping Hospital.
In her Facebook posting, Catriona said: “There is no replacement when you lose a mother.”
She also urged her fans and those who know her family to pray for her mother’s soul.
In the other accident in Malacca, Tee Hiap Kiong, 47, died when he rammed his car into a cement lorry that was turning into a factory along the Sungai Udang-Paya Rumput-Ayer Keroh Highway at 9pm on Tuesday.
His wife Kee Lay Chern, 46, and elder daughter Woan Ying, 17, were seriously injured, with the latter in a coma at press time.
Another daughter, Xiin Ru, 16, broke a leg in the crash. The lorry driver was unhurt.
The family was on their way home to Masjid Tanah after visiting a relative for Chinese New Year in Sungai Mati, Muar.
