GEORGE TOWN: Two women, one pregnant and the other with an arm in a sling, appeared in separate courts here to deny they had harmed each other.
Magistrates at both courts set May 11 to mention their respective cases.
Both P. Shantakumari, 38, and M. Mageswari, 43, claimed trial to injuring each other at the Parmanands Tailor shop in Jalan Batu Feringghi at about 7pm on Feb 5.
Shantakumari denied using a pair of scissors and a round wooden chair to hurt Mageswari.
Shantakumari was charged yesterday under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to three years, a fine or whipping, or any of the two punishments.
Shantakumari, who was clad in a white and navy blue maternity dress, appeared dazed when the charge was read out to her in Tamil by a court interpreter.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Azizah Jaafar proposed a RM6,000 bail but Shantakumari, who was unrepresented, sought for a lower sum.
Magistrate Noor Aini Yusof set bail at RM3,000 in one surety and fixed May 11 for mention, pending a medical report and for the accused to engage a lawyer.
Later, Mageswari claimed trial at another magistrate’s court to voluntarily causing hurt to Shantakumari at the same place on the same day under Section 323 of the Penal Code.
Mageswari, whose right arm was in a sling, faces a maximum year’s jail or a fine not exceeding RM2,000 or both, if convicted.
DPP Mohd Faisal Md Noor proposed bail at RM4,000.
Mageswari, also unrepresented, sought for a lower sum, saying she was undergoing physiotherapy for her right arm and had many family members to care for.
Magistrate B. Sripracha Nanthini set bail at RM2,000 in one surety and fixed May 11 for mention.
